Half Termly Homework Project

Alongside weekly class homework, a half termly homework project will be set to support classroom learning. Below is this half terms project.

Phonics and reading

Systematic synthetic daily phonics is taught following the Read Write Inc Programme throughout Early Years and Key Stage 1, beginning in the summer term of Pre-school. Pupils are grouped according to ability across the year groups. Progress is tracked throughout the year by the early reading and phonics lead and groupings are adjusted accordingly. Pupils in Year 1 have a National Phonics Screening Test in June. Pupils who do not achieve the expected standard re-sit the test the following year when they are in Y2.  Fast track tutoring will be used as an intervention when required to support early reading and writing.
When pupils complete the Read Write Inc phonics programme they begin 'No-nonsense spelling'.  This programme is taught throughout Key Stage 2.

Reading
We use the Read Write Inc reading scheme throughout Early Years and Key Stage 1 where books are fully decodable and correlate with where the child is up to in the scheme.  Children are also sent home two books which are matched to their reading level from Read, Write, Inc. and a book to read for pleasure with an adult, which will be from the school library..

If you have any questions or would like any further information about the curriculum or how you can further support your child's learning at home then please speak to your child's class teacher.

If you would like any copies of the documents on this page, the school office will be happy to print them for you.

Year 2 News and Gallery

October

In Science, we have been carrying out an investigation to find out what happens as humans grow from babies to adults.

It was great fun for some Year 2 pupils to visit other classes to measure the handspan of children and teachers.  They then came back to class to tell us the results.

October

Year 2 had a visit from Robbie and his Therapy Dog, George. It was lovely to meet George and see him do some tricks. We really look forward to his next visits when we will read stories to George.

November

We learned how to keep safe with pets or with dogs that we meet whilst outdoors.

December

In our computing lessons, we have learned all about algorithms and the importance of persevering to solve problems. We enjoyed playing problem solving games and writing algorithms even though we needed to debug our algorithm many times!

January

Year 2 enjoyed 'tinkering' and finding out a little about Scratch Jnr, ready to learn more in Computing lessons.  The children really enjoyed using the ipads for the first time.

January

After exploring resources, wheels and axles and looking at the features of a fire engine, Year 2 designed a fire engine in their DT lesson. The children have put lots of effort into following their designs to create a model fire engine.

February

In our Computing lessons we have begun to program using simple block code.

We chose two or three sprites and programmed them to have a race against each other and then go back to the start.

February

In Maths, we have been using notes and coins to make different amounts.

March

In Art, we have been creating different Tones.  We made a tint of yellow by adding white to make it lighter.  We added black to make the paint darker and created a shade of yellow.
